Raged red fibers in muscle tissue
WebMERRF is characterized by muscle twitches (myoclonus), weakness (myopathy), and progressive stiffness (spasticity). When the muscle cells of affected individuals are stained and viewed under a microscope, these cells usually appear abnormal. These abnormal muscle cells are called ragged-red fibers. WebMar 19, 2024 · RRFs represent the accumulation of abnormal mitochondria below the plasma membrane of the muscle fiber and are considered a sort of “hallmark” of mitochondrial dysfunction. Their tissue recognition might facilitate gene prioritization in primary mitochondrial disorders. Figure 1.

WebAn abnormal appearance of muscle fibers observed on muscle biopsy. Ragged red fibers can be visualized with Gomori trichrome staining as irregular and intensely red subsarcolemmal zones, whereas the normal myofibrils are green. The margins of affect fibers appear red and ragged. WebThe characteristic morphologic change in muscle biopsy, ragged-red fibers (RRFs) provides an important clue to the diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Demographic data, pre-senting symptoms, neurological features, and investigative findings in 60 patients with ragged-red fibers (RRFs) on muscle biopsy, seen between January 1990 and December
