WebBrittany History. Brittany is known as Bretagne in French and at first it was a province and duchy and only later turned into a region. Rennes, former provincial capital, is the chief city. In ancient times the region was part of Armorica. Julius Caesar invaded the country in 56 bc and it thus became the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis. WebBreton was introduced into Armorica (western Gaul; now Brittany) in the 5th and 6th centuries by migrants from southwestern Britain. It became firmly established in the western part of the Armorican peninsula, while in the eastern part a Romance language, Gallo-Romance, took hold. French later became the language of the region’s towns.
